Lock & Key was originally developed as a television series through the Fox Broadcast Network, with Josh Friedman writing the tv season adaptation of Dream Works Television and a pilot script adaptation of Twenty-First Century Fox Television. Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orsi starring the manager producers of the pilot, starring Mark Pelgrino, Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Sara Bolger, Skyler Gartner and Nick Stahl. The pilot wasn't ordered a series by Fox, though it did show up at 27 point of entry Comic-Con. At point of entry Comic-Con, the much-anticipated film trilogy announced that Kurtzman and Orsi would function executive producers through Universal Pictures. [5]

On May 9, 21 On, IDW Entertainment is reportedly developing a television series adaptation of Lock & Key. The author of the novel, Joe Hill, hopes to play the role of executive producer in writing a production pilot. The project was created unitedly with Circle of Confusion with the intention of pitching cable networks and streaming services. []]
It was announced on April 20, 2017 that Hulu has ordered the assembly. the assembly was developed by Carlton Key with Hill and can be directed by Scott Derrickson, set to be the showrunner and executive producer of the series, alongside Will Hill, Derrickson, Lindsay Springer, Ted Adams and David Ozar. Production companies involved the pilot were expected to incorporate Carlton Kews Production and IDW Entertainment. []] On July 7, thereon was reported that Andy Masachi was replacing Derrickson because the pilot's director. thanks to schedule conflicts Derrickson was forced to quit production.
